Barrett's esophagus is a condition in which abnormal cells develop on the inner wall of lower esophagus (gullet). Barrett's esophagus is estimated to affect about 700,000 adults in the United States. Although Barrett's esophagus may cause no symptoms itself, a small number of people with this condition develop type relatively rare but often fatal cancer of the esophagus called adenocarcinoma ooesophageal. Barrett's esophagus is not a cancerous condition, but over a long period of time, it can sometimes lead to cancer developing in the lower part of the esophagus. Approximately 1-2 of 200 people in the United Kingdom Barrett's esophagus, but very few people with this condition continue to develop cancer (about 1,100 annually). It is associated with the very common condition gastroooesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Causes of Barrett's esophagus

Common causes of Barrett's esophagus:

A diet rich in fat which is low in fruits and vegetables may increase your risk of many types of cancer. The risk increases if you are also obese (overweight).

Esophageal cancer is more common in people over 50 years

The long-term exposure to certain chemicals and pollutants - this can irritate the esophagus and increase your risk of developing cancer.

Symptoms of Barrett's esophagus

Some symptoms of Barrett's esophagus:

Vomiting

Painful swallowing

Difficulty swallowing

Persistent heartburn

Weight loss

A feeling of fullness during eating.

Treatment of Barrett's esophagus

An anti-reflux operation can be performed, usually if the drugs are ineffective. If cancerous cells or severe dysplasia has been detected, the lower esophagus must be removed surgically

It is essential once Barrett's esophagus was diagnosed, the treatment is given which eliminates acid reflux. The drugs used are typical lansoprazole, omeprazole and pantoprazole. They are very effective in eliminating symptoms of reflux. Specialists treating this condition may be necessary to verify the effectiveness of drugs, using pH monitoring for 24 hours.
