Gluten Symptoms

Posted on February 18, 2010.
Gluten SymptomsHow did you discover that you have an allergy to gluten? Symptoms?

I was experiencing severe abdominal pain, nausea, intermittent vomiting, severe bloating / gas, diarrhea. I went for ultrasounds of my abdomen, a series of tests of the gall bladder, stomach and an endoscope. Everything that Dr. discovered is an inflammation in the stomach. I think it may be something else. I read about allergies to gluten and I wanted some "real" life stories before turning to my doctor this. Any thoughts?

All your symptoms _can_ be caused by celiac disease. (I was 14 when I was diagnosed - I was sick - I could not manage a week in school, I was very tired, nausea, headache, etc.)

The main thing is to ensure that you do not cut your diet after tests (not even reduce it). It is difficult to eliminate completely without the support of a dietician, and although this small amount can still cause serious health problems, it may not be sufficient to register in the tests. (The current recommendation is to have about 5 or 6 slices of bread, or the equivalent, per day.)

Go and ask to be tested - this is a simple blood test at trial. If this result is positive, then you'll probably send an upper endoscopy with biopsy. (The damage is often not visible endoscopically, and samples must be examined under the microscope in the laboratory of the way.)

Good luck.

I have not been formally diagnosed, but after being treated for severe bloating and discomfort for 3 years and after all sorts of tests I had no help and the doctors could not find anything. If I read a letter Mayo Clinic news of a woman who had the same problems and was treated for everything from Crohn's disease colitis without any relief. They finally diagnosed with celiac disease (gluten allergy) and she reacted immediately. I decided myself from gluten-free products and my stomach is 100% better. The doctors can perform the tests, but you may have to tell them you suspect gluten intolerance because they do not seem to think that. I too had all the tests you mentioned.

My nephew is 12 years with celiac disease. He had all the symptoms to the point where we suspected he might have been bulimic.
He continued to lose weight, do not go through growth spurts in over a year, and was constantly ill.
If after all these diagnostic tests that you still can not find an answer, try to have the IgAtTG IgAEMA and blood tests. These are blood markers that show that your body produces certain antibodies associated with the disease.
They only draw blood, and can help you save time.

All your symptoms are classic symptoms of celiac disease. I really want a second opinion from a gastroenterologist who specializes in celiac disease.

The big thing about celiac disease is that if you follow a strict gluten-free, you'll feel better pretty quickly.
