There are three steps:
FIRST STEP - The abortion pill
Your health care provider will give you the abortion pill in the clinic. You will also be given antibiotics to start taking the pill after abortion.
The abortion pill works by blocking the hormone progesterone. Without progesterone, the lining of the uterus breaks down, and pregnancy can not continue.
STEP - MISOPROSTOL
You take a second drug - misoprostol. It causes the uterus to empty.
You and your health care provider to plan the timing and location of the second stage. You take the second drug to three days after making the abortion pill. Your healthcare provider will give you instructions on how and when to take the second drug.
The second drug - misoprostol - you will have cramps and bleeding profusely. Some women may begin bleeding before taking the second drug. But for most, the bleeding and cramping after starting taking it. It usually lasts a few hours. You can see large clots of blood or tissue at the time of abortion.
More than half of women abort within four or five hours after taking the second drug. For others, it takes more time. But most women abort in a few days.
